Stoic (2009)

Directed by Uwe Boll
Starring Edward Furlong, Shaun Sipos and Sam Levinson
(Unrated - R level content)

3 stars (out of 4)

!!Disturbing Content Warning!! Uwe Bolls movie Seed, was one of the profoundly disturbing movies Ive seen. In comparison, Stoic is so disturbing that Seed might as well be Willy Wonka.

This film claims to be inspired by true events which I hope is a lie. Three cellmates turn on a fourth by exposing him to an escalating cycle of psychological, physical, and sexual torture. It starts as some simple bullying like you would see in a college fraternity and evolves to the most vile acts ever depicted on screen. There's also plenty of disturbing gross-out scenes where they force the victim to eat his own vomit among other atrocities.

The movie is filmed as a drama with mockumentary-style interview segments throughout in regular intervals. Their motives are never entirely clear but are hinted to in these interviews. It's open to interpretation, but I believe that one of the abusers was truly a psychopath who was completely apathetic to what was happening. Another was remorseful but never showed any hesitation during the committing of the crimes. The final wanted to stop the violence but was too scared to stand up for himself, really though he could have stopped it earlier. The three of them together have no redeemable qualities and are all deserving of the cruelest fate imaginable.

I know many people are going to give this film a low rating because Uwe Boll directed it, which isn't fair because its effectively disturbing and dramatic and will affect many viewers emotionally. Many others will rate this low because they wont be able to get past some of the early disgusting scenes, this isn't fair either because you know its coming so don't start watching to begin with. I certainly think that this film is much better than the ratings it will probably get.
