Tormented (2009)

Directed by Jon Wright
Starring Alex Pettyfer (Rated R)
3 stars (out of 4)

This story has been done over and over. The geeky kid gets killed or commits suicide then comes back as a ghost to punish those who bullied him. Red Mist and Tamara are both recent movies with the same plot. However, this one has the better acting, dialogue, and directing than its peers. The UK has put out some very fine horror movies in recent years and this keeps that momentum going. I'm not a fan of movies with
ghosts. Especially the asian type of ghosts like in The Messengers or The Grudge. But this ghost is not the whimsical, flickering apparation that we've come to expect. He's more of a zombie type character except with intelligence. His style of killing isn't scaring people to death or pushing them off balconies, he prefers the more gory deaths that you find in American horror like Hatchet. It uses a lot of classic American slasher techniques. Lots of unsupervised young people who are picked off in order from least to most important. Also, if someone's having sex you know they're about to die. All of this was pioneered by Freddy and Jason. The killer starts by sending nasty messsages to his tormentors in the form of profane smiley faces. These are the funniest parts of the movie for me. This may not be the most original horror film you'll see, but its certainly well-crafted using a tried and true formula, and the dialogue is really a cut above most slashers. I recommended it highly.
