Tom Cruise Does Not Suck

I've been bothered by some things I've read on blogs and forums recently. It's an attitude really. An attitude that says "if that guy is rich and famous, but has made some misstep, then he is an douchebag". It's almost like dealing with cinematic hipsters. You know the type. They listen to unsigned indie bands and tell you that your favorite musician is a sell out. Guess what hipster, my favorite musician was unsigned once, but now they're rich and famous because they didn't suck. Even if they did put out that bad album a couple of years ago, it's not like their talent has suddenly vanished. Eat it, hipster.

This goes out to the keyboard warrior I met in some chatroom last week who bravely typed, "I would never pay to see a movie with Tom Cruise in it.". Tom Cruise does not suck. So he jumped on Oprah's couch? Big deal. Scientologists are stupid? Sure they are, but that doesn't mean Tom isn't talented. Besides Scientology, here's a few other things he's been in: War of the Worlds, Magnolia, The Color of Money, Minority Report, Rain Man, Collateral. No self-respecting cineaste would say all those movies are bad. He's usually pretty good in his lesser work as well. To me, that's the mark of someone with a real passion for their job. Just because this guy is richer, better-looking, and more talented than you (and me) doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy his films. I'm really looking forward to his upcoming sci-fi films "Oblivion"and "All You Need Is Kill".

The hater bandwagon is overloaded for filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. I'll admit that "The Happening" wasn't close to being good. "Lady In The Water" and "The Village" weren't great, but certainly not deserving of their horrid reputation. "Signs", "Unbreakable" and "Sixth Sense" were great films. Three great films are more than some directors make in a lifetime. Also, you can't discount three. There's no way some moron accidentally comes up with 3 great stories. Maybe "The Last Airbender" was awful, but who cares? It's based on a cartoon. No one bitched that much when the live-action "Scooby-Doo" movies came out.

Now the trailer has been released for "After Earth" starring Will Smith and his son Jaden. This looks like the kind of film that could put M. Night's career back on a winning path. Already I've heard it dismissed by many of my movie-loving peers because of Shyamalan's name on the poster. Get over yourselves. This man has a brain that is more imaginative than most. Don't write him off.

One of the most unjustly reviled figures in cinema is Uwe Boll. No one cares that "Rampage", "Seed" and "Stoic" are brilliant commentaries on the nature of violence, only that he ruined some video game adaptation that they were looking forward to. "House of the Dead", "Blood Rayne", "Alone In The Dark", and "Dungeon Seige" and their sequels take up a lot of Boll's filmography. Gamers get mad because these adaptations suck, but why would he make a serious effort to change that? The producers obviously don't care because they keep hiring him to direct. Video game movies are generally pointless anyway.

The problem is, those who watch video game movies are usually internet savvy. To put it another way, the same dumb kids who care about video game movies are the ones who bitch on the internet. Those who enjoy Boll's other films spend much less time being obnoxious on forums. This is a director who has worked with Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Michelle Rodriguez and even the great Ben Kingsley. To all the idiots who bash him online, he's got a message for you in the picture to the left.

  1. As a person, Tom Cruise most certainly does suck. However in his MANY great roles, I can look past that. I do understand how people can confuse his acting and personal life, because I know I'm guilty of it with many other famous people.

    1. I don't know if he sucks as a person, he's certainly made some stupid decisions and continues to hold some idiotic beliefs. He also has done some good in life I'm sure. When War of The Worlds filmed near my area he stopped in a gas station for a soda and ended up dropping a thousand dollars cash into a mason jar for a sick kid. No cameras around, no publicity. He just did it. Then again, Scientologists do a lot of bad things.

In my article I just wanted to point out that his work shouldn't be dismissed because of his lifestyle. Also, a lot of folks don't put that much thought into it. They just see some rich and famous guy and when there's a negative story they jump on the hater bandwagon because it makes them feel superior. That's really what bothers me.

      Thanks for visiting and commenting.

I care! That cartoon show is absolutely wonderful. Comparing it to Scooby Doo is like comparing Watchmen with Bazooka Joe. People cared because they didn't want to see something they love get shat on. But whether or not the movie was based on anything is irrelevant to the fact that it's still one of the most godawful things ever to grace the box office.

That being said, out of the 5 films of Shyamalan's I've seen, 3 of them I really liked. So I'm not writing him off yet.

    1. You are right, comparing it to Scooby Doo isn't fair. Scooby Doo is at least a clever cartoon.

The fact that people were disappointed by The Last Airbender movie is less about Shyamalan and more about the fact they liked the dumb cartoon in the first place. It was below M Night's intellectual level. I'd compare it to asking Hitchcock to direct a live-action Spongebob.

      Damn hipster.

  3. A Hitchcockian Spongebob? I'd watch it. It's just as ridiculous as the idea of the director of Memento making a movie about a guy in a bat suit fighting a dude in clown makeup.

    1. The Dark Knight and Memento are both genius commentaries on the human condition. The Last Airbender is about a bald kid with an arrow on his head to remind him the correct way to put on a baseball cap. All those water ball things are highly homoerotic and kids shouldn't be allowed to watch.

  5. I don't like Tom Cruise one bit (from what I've seen of him from the unreliable media). However, anyone who calls him a bad actor clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. They've probably only seen his more recent mainstream duds like Jack Reacher and War of the Worlds. If they just went back and looked at Rainman, Interview with the Vampire and Magnolia then I highly doubt they could honestly say that he is a bad actor.

As for M. Night Shyamalan. He is honestly one of the most visionary directors in modern-cinema. The Sixth Sense and The Village are two of my favourite movies (despite how blatantly unpopular The Village is). I despise his film 'The Happening' but that doesn't make him a bad writer/director. People shouldn't have the attitude "you're only as good as your last film", they should go on the actor/directors accomplishments throughout their career.

    Just my two cents.
